A man is now in hospital under police guard following a confrontation with an off-duty policeman in Newlands, St Catherine today.

The police say a firearm containing one round of ammunition was seized in the incident, which reportedly happened along the Newlands main road.

The Portmore Police report that the off-duty cop was in a taxi when he was accosted by a man who was also a passenger in the vehicle.

A statement from the police said the man opened fire at the cop.

But according to the statement issued by the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Corporate Communications Unit, the policeman “repelled the attack”, during which the man was shot and disarmed.

The injured man was taken to hospital where he was admitted.

The police say the incident has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations and the Inspectorate of Constabulary branch of the JCF.
